Beauty Bender: Best Makeup Finds

One of the benefits of working in print and TV is that you get to ask top experts not only what’s the newest, latest, and greatest in beauty and skincare, but also, specifically, what’s going to work on you.

My skin is oily—and anyone with oily skin knows that it’s a blessing and a curse. OS tends to wrinkle less and breakout more, and from a makeup perspective, getting it to stay on all day can be a hassle.

If you don’t know what skin type you are, check out Harpers Bazaar’s quiz here.

As far as skin prep, I’m not a huge fan of multi-products. San Francisco skin guru Julia Robertson from Sweet Asylum recommends separate products for oily or acne-prone skin because multi’s tend to aggravate my skin. Oil-free moisturizers like Pevonia or Shiseido work wonders, and though they’re spendy, a little goes a long way. And, well, it’s your FACE.

The key to getting foundation and eye makeup to stay put is the trinity: primer, oil-free foundation, and loose powder. Here are my favorites:

Benefit’s The Porefessional.  Any shoot I’ve ever done, I see a Benefit product in the MUA’s kit.  I knew this one was a winner when I tested it at Sephora. It covered the lines on my knuckles! Stays put and gives you a clear canvas. I also dab on my lids before I put on eye makeup.

Giorgio Armani’s Oil Free Luminous Silk Foundation. Seriously pigmented and super smooth. I use color 6. SO many makeup artists use this one.

Mineral powder. Recently have been loving bareMinerals Mineral Veil. I like the Completely Sheer, but if you want more color they also have a tinted version.

I always set foundation, eyeliner (anything wet) with some kind of power (or shadow) so my face doesn’t slide off by lunchtime. I also carry a stick concealer and pressed power for touch-ups. Now that I live in Tokyo, I’m trying out Fasio zero expert concealer #2 (has UV protection too!). I always have my trusty Chanel Poudre compact in Translucent 2.

Speaking of Japanese makeup… I’ll post about my top picks soon. Japan is a beauty product mecca so I’m stoked to test drive some new skin care and makeup goodies. And the hair! What are the girls using here? Research. Stay tuned. J

Wuh oh…
