Mr. Ashley Jones
Dear Ms. Popper,
Thank you very much for providing such informative info about modelling in Japan. I came across your site through the gaijinpot website and I was really happy to learn about the possibilities of internet self promotion also.
I checked out the photographer links that you posted at the bottom of one of the articles and wondered if you knew of any professional photographers in Osaka. I live in Kobe and want to get started with some professional shots.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you kindly and thanks for the inspiration.
Regards,
Ash

Hi Ash,
Thanks for the kind note, and I’m happy the GaijinPot articles are helpful to you!
I don’t know any shooters in Osaka, but that said– there must be a ton. Here are my suggestions:
1) Email the Osaka agencies (Select Eve, Cosmopolitan, et.al.) and ask them for headshot photographer recommendations.
2) Come to Tokyo and get headshots- there’s a much bigger market here and many more shooters to chose from.
3) Register with Model Mayhem and find a photographer in Osaka- but this isn’t too promising for the Osaka area. I just checked, and there’s only one shooter taking test requests.
I think your best bet is to speak to the agencies and get a recommendation. OR… really go the distance (literally) and get photos done in Tokyo. Considering your headshot will be used for the next 1-2 years… it’s worth the investment in my opinion.
Let me know how it goes– if you decide to come to Tokyo, my agency has recommended a few– I can hook you up.
Ganbatte!

Hi Cynthia!
I am planning to move from Shikoku to Tokyo soon and wondering who you teach with to have flexible night hours that still sponsors your humanities visa? I want to give myself the daytime freedom to model, but not finding too many companies yet that would sponsor my visa without a bunch of daytime work hours. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Lindsey! Message me on FB… I have a couple of suggestions for you!

Hi Cynthia,
I’ve messaged you before on Facebook. Thanks for the advice! I’m now in the Tokyo area and was looking online for head shot photographers when I came across this site. I haven’t contacted any agencies yet since I have nothing to show. Is there any good places or sites to get in contact with photographers here? I saw that you already mentioned contacting the agencies for referrals but I’m still in search of agencies as well. I will at least register with Model Mayhem for the time being.

Hi Rei! Here are some tips and links to agencies– your agent can refer you to a great headshot photographer: http://injapan.gaijinpot.com/work/work-tips/2013/06/25/modeling-in-japan-submitting-to-agents/
And if you’re on MM, here are some tips on being careful with photographers: http://injapan.gaijinpot.com/work/work-tips/2013/07/19/modeling-in-japan-101-watch-out-for-the-gwc/

Hi Cynthia,
So Its better to just contact agencies first. I wasn’t sure if I needed something to show before contracting. Thank you for the help!

You can get recommendations for shooters from agencies before they decide to take you on or not. Most are happy to help you!
